The hotel's original timber work, both inside and out, is remarkably well-preserved, with the exterior discovered in 1935 after the removal of a century-old brick façade. A 'Wildman' or 'Woodwose' carving, a medieval symbol believed to ward off evil spirits, adorns a beam in the lounge. Guests immediately sense the building's history upon entering the hall, dominated by massive molded oak beams. Once the town's principal posting house during the coaching era, accommodating travelers from London, Bury St Edmunds, and Norwich, today's guests can relax by the beautiful Elizabethan fireplace in the lounge and admire antique carvings in the Cordell Restaurant.
