Latvia is one of the least-understood Schengen applications made from the UAE, and the confusion is usually about the timeline rather than the paperwork. The published decision period is 15 days — but the embassy can extend it to 45 days where additional verification is needed, and that is a three-fold difference nobody plans for. The Latvia visa for UAE residents is a Schengen Type C short-stay visa, lodged through VFS Global and decided by the Consular Section of the Latvian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Do UAE Residents Need a Latvia Visa?
Your passport decides, not your Emirates ID.
Emirati passport holders do not need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, under the EU–UAE waiver.
Other GCC passport holders do. The UAE is the only Gulf state covered, so Bahraini, Kuwaiti, Omani, Qatari and Saudi nationals apply in the ordinary way.
All other nationalities resident in the UAE apply for a Schengen Type C visa. Your residence permit lets you apply from here rather than from your home country; it is not an exemption.
ETIAS begins in the last quarter of 2026, on a date the European Commission has yet to confirm — a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, not a visa.
Where the Application Goes
Applications to Latvia's diplomatic and consular missions are lodged through the external service provider VFS Global, by appointment booked through the online system. They are then processed by the Consular Section of the Latvian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which is the deciding mission for applications made here.
One point specific to Latvia's mission in the UAE: it serves the Gulf broadly. Residents and citizens of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar are within its consular reach, which is worth knowing if you hold a Gulf residence outside the Emirates.
15 Days, or 45 — Plan for the Longer One
This is the number that catches people out. Applications lodged through VFS are processed within 15 days of receipt, but where additional verification is required, the embassy may extend that to 45 days.
The extension is not a penalty and it does not signal a problem with your file — it simply means something needs checking. But it does mean a Latvia application made three weeks before departure is a gamble rather than a plan. Lodge early, keep your travel dates flexible until the decision lands, and do not buy non-refundable tickets against the 15-day figure.
Is Latvia the Right Country to Apply To?
Under the EU main-destination rule you apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, and where nights are equal, to the country you will enter first. Riga is frequently combined with Tallinn and Vilnius on a Baltic circuit, and the nights are often split fairly evenly across all three — which makes the country of first entry the deciding factor more often here than almost anywhere else in Schengen. We work that out before anything is booked.
Documents You Will Need
- Passport valid at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area, issued in the last ten years, with at least two blank pages
- UAE residence permit valid well beyond your return date, plus Emirates ID
- Completed and signed application form with a recent Schengen-specification photograph
- Travel medical insurance covering the whole Schengen area for the full trip, at the minimum required cover
- Confirmed return flights and accommodation for every night
- Employment evidence: NOC or salary certificate from your UAE employer, or trade licence and establishment documents if self-employed
- Stamped personal bank statements for the last three to six months
- For a private visit: an invitation from your host in Latvia with their identity and status documents
- For business: an invitation from the Latvian company setting out the purpose and dates
Biometrics and the EES Border System
Fingerprints and a photograph are taken in person at the visa centre, which is why a first Schengen application cannot be lodged entirely without you. Once recorded, they can be reused for later Schengen applications within the permitted period.
At the border, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026. Facial image, fingerprints and travel document data are recorded on entry and exit, and passport stamps have been replaced by digital records, so your 90-days-in-180 is counted automatically across the whole area. On a Baltic trip this matters: crossing between Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania is internal movement and is not re-recorded — what counts is your entry to and exit from the Schengen area itself.

Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make
- Planning to 15 days. The ceiling is 45, and the extension needs no fault on your part.
- Assuming a Baltic trip means Latvia. Split nights across Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius usually make first entry the deciding rule.
- Booking non-refundable travel before the decision.
- Insurance covering Latvia alone rather than the whole Schengen area.
- Accommodation with gaps across a multi-country Baltic itinerary.
- Bank statements that are unstamped or show a balance that appeared days before applying.
