The Sri Lanka visa for UAE residents is one of the simpler processes we handle, running entirely through an electronic travel authorisation. The two things worth understanding before you book are who pays for it and how long it actually lasts. Do UAE Residents Need a Sri Lanka Visa?
Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration requires all foreign nationals to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to arrival. There is no group that simply turns up without one, so the question is not whether you need an ETA but which terms apply to your passport.
As always, this follows your passport nationality rather than your UAE residence, though your Emirates ID and residence visa support the application.
The Free 30-Day Tourist ETA
Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 selected countries are granted the tourist ETA free of charge for 30 days. Nationals of the Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore are also processed free of charge, and under a bilateral arrangement Maldivian nationals receive 90 days rather than 30.
Two features of the free tourist ETA are worth knowing before you plan an itinerary:
- It is valid for 30 days from your first arrival, and
- it carries a double-entry facility within that 30-day validity — so a side trip to the Maldives or southern India and back to Colombo is accommodated without a second application.
That double-entry provision is genuinely useful and frequently overlooked, particularly by travellers combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives, who often assume they need to apply twice.

Staying Longer Than 30 Days
Travellers who have obtained the free tourist ETA and wish to remain beyond 30 days may apply for an extension within Sri Lanka on payment of the applicable fee. This is a normal, provided-for process rather than an irregularity — but it is applied for there, not arranged in advance from the UAE, and it is worth planning around rather than discovering late.
If you already know your trip will exceed 30 days, tell us at the outset. It changes what we recommend.
Documents Required
- Passport valid well beyond your intended stay, with blank pages.
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, valid beyond your travel dates.
- Confirmed return or onward flight reservation — we arrange reservations rather than have you buy before approval.
- Proof of accommodation for the stay, or host details where you are staying privately.
- Sufficient funds for the duration of your visit.
- Recent passport-style photograph where required for your category.
Business travel is applied for under its own ETA category and is supported by an invitation from the Sri Lankan company along with a letter from your UAE employer.

Processing Time and Validity
The ETA is an electronic process and is generally decided quickly, but "generally" is not "always": applications can be held for further checks, and an approval that arrives on the morning of departure is not a plan. Apply well ahead and travel with the approval in hand.
Validity, entries and permitted stay are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration. No agent can guarantee an approval or a processing time, and we do not offer expedited handling.
Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make
- Assuming no authorisation is needed. Every foreign national requires an ETA before arrival, including those whose ETA is free.
- Confusing "free" with "automatic". The free tourist ETA still has to be applied for and approved before you fly.
- Missing the double-entry facility. A Maldives or India side trip is usually accommodated within the same 30-day ETA.
- Planning a trip longer than 30 days without a plan for the extension. It is applied for in Sri Lanka, on payment.
- Applying under the tourist category for business. Business travel has its own ETA category and evidence.
- Leaving it to the airport. Airlines check for a valid ETA at check-in, not on arrival in Colombo.
