Degree attestation is the longest of the common chains, and the one where the timeline is least in anyone's control — because a step in the middle depends on your university answering a letter. Most people need it for a UAE work permit, a professional licence, or a school or university admission. Degree certificate attestation for the UAE is worth starting earlier than feels necessary, for reasons this guide sets out.
Why This One Takes Longer Than the Others
Unlike a birth or marriage certificate, an educational document usually has to be verified with the institution that issued it before any government body will attest it. That verification is a genuine back-and-forth: the authority contacts the university, the university confirms the award, and only then does the chain continue.
Three things follow from that, and they explain nearly every delay we see:
- Your university's responsiveness sets the pace. Not the government, and certainly not us. A university that answers in a week produces a fast file; one that takes two months produces a slow one, and no agent can change that.
- Old degrees are harder. If the institution has merged, renamed, closed or digitised its records since you graduated, verification takes longer and sometimes needs supporting evidence such as transcripts or a graduation letter.
- Transcripts often travel with the degree. Many receiving parties want the transcript attested too. Doing both together is far cheaper than discovering later that you need the second one.
Equivalency is a separate thing. Attestation confirms your certificate is genuine; equivalency is a UAE assessment of what your qualification is equal to locally, and some employers and licensing bodies require it in addition. How UAE Attestation Actually Works
Attestation is a chain, and every link has to be completed in order. Skipping one does not slow the file down — it invalidates everything after it, and you start again.
For a document issued outside the UAE, the chain normally runs:
- Home-country authentication. The document is verified by the competent authority in the country that issued it — the exact body depends on the document and the country, and it is where most delays begin.
- UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country. They attest the document after the home-country authority has done so, never before.
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The final leg, performed here in the UAE.
The Ministry sets out requirements that apply whatever the document is, and they are worth reading twice because they are the usual cause of a rejection:
- The document must be in Arabic or English, or accompanied by a legally certified translation.
- The original must already be certified by the relevant competent authorities.
- Documents must not be laminated. This single rule ends more applications than any other. If yours is laminated, do not peel it yourself — talk to us first.
- A UAE PASS account must be active to apply through the Ministry's own channels.
The Ministry allows the journey to be completed either as two separate steps — its own attestation first, then the destination country's embassy or consulate in the UAE — or as a single application covering both. Which is appropriate depends on where the document is going and what the receiving party will accept.
One rule deserves emphasis: a rejected application cannot be amended or reopened. You must correct the problem and submit an entirely new application. That is precisely why we check a file before it is lodged rather than after.
