A single status certificate proves you are free to marry. It is required for marriage formalities in the UAE and in many countries abroad, and it is the document with the widest variety of names — which is exactly why people request the wrong one.
It Goes by Several Names
Depending on the issuing country, the same underlying document may be called a certificate of no impediment, a certificate of no marriage record, a bachelorhood or spinsterhood certificate, a celibacy certificate, or an affidavit of single status. Some countries issue it from a civil registry; others accept a sworn affidavit before a notary or an embassy.
Two consequences follow:
- Ask the receiving authority for their exact term. A registry-issued certificate and a sworn affidavit are not always interchangeable, and the one you can obtain easily is not always the one that will be accepted.
- The validity window is short. Like a police clearance certificate, this document describes a state on a given date, and receiving parties commonly require it to have been issued recently. Attestation consumes part of that window, so starting with an old certificate is usually a false economy.
Where a previous marriage has ended, the single status certificate is normally required alongside the divorce decree or the deceased spouse's death certificate, not instead of it. Tell us the full history at the outset so the file is built once.
How UAE Attestation Actually Works
Attestation is a chain, and every link has to be completed in order. Skipping one does not slow the file down — it invalidates everything after it, and you start again.
For a document issued outside the UAE, the chain normally runs:
- Home-country authentication. The document is verified by the competent authority in the country that issued it — the exact body depends on the document and the country, and it is where most delays begin.
- UAE Embassy or Consulate in that country. They attest the document after the home-country authority has done so, never before.
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The final leg, performed here in the UAE.
The Ministry sets out requirements that apply whatever the document is, and they are worth reading twice because they are the usual cause of a rejection:
- The document must be in Arabic or English, or accompanied by a legally certified translation.
- The original must already be certified by the relevant competent authorities.
- Documents must not be laminated. This single rule ends more applications than any other. If yours is laminated, do not peel it yourself — talk to us first.
- A UAE PASS account must be active to apply through the Ministry's own channels.
The Ministry allows the journey to be completed either as two separate steps — its own attestation first, then the destination country's embassy or consulate in the UAE — or as a single application covering both. Which is appropriate depends on where the document is going and what the receiving party will accept.
One rule deserves emphasis: a rejected application cannot be amended or reopened. You must correct the problem and submit an entirely new application. That is precisely why we check a file before it is lodged rather than after.
