If you're living in the UAE and planning a trip to India in 2026 — whether for a family visit, business meetings, a holiday, or medical treatment — you'll almost certainly need a visa. India doesn't offer visa-on-arrival for most nationalities, and the rules around who qualifies for an e-visa versus who must visit a consulate in person can be genuinely confusing. This guide covers everything UAE residents need to know: visa types, eligibility, fees, documents, processing times, and the key exceptions that catch people off guard — including Pakistani passport holders, OCI cardholders, and third-country nationals.

Do UAE Residents Need a India Visa?

Yes — almost every foreign national travelling to India from the UAE needs a valid visa, regardless of how long they've lived in Dubai or whether they hold a UAE residency permit. Your UAE residence visa does not waive the Indian visa requirement.

There are a few important exceptions worth knowing:

  • Indian passport holders are citizens of India and do not require a visa to enter India — they simply travel on their Indian passport.
  • OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders do not need a separate visa. The OCI card, when presented alongside a valid foreign passport, serves as a lifelong multiple-entry visa. However, OCI cardholders must ensure their OCI card is linked to their current passport (particularly important if you've renewed your passport since the OCI was issued).
  • PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card holders — note that PIO cards were merged into the OCI scheme. If you still hold an old PIO card, check its current validity status with the Indian consulate, as most PIO cards have been effectively superseded by OCI.
  • Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan do not require a visa for India, though this applies to the passport nationality rather than UAE residency status.

For everyone else — expats from the Philippines, Pakistan, Egypt, the UK, the US, European nations, African countries, Southeast Asia, and UAE nationals themselves — a valid India visa is mandatory before boarding your flight.

India Visa Types Available from Dubai

India offers two main pathways for UAE-based applicants: the India e-Visa (applied for entirely online) and the Regular/Sticker Visa processed through the Indian Consulate in Dubai via VFS Global. Here's how they compare:

Feature India e-Visa Regular Visa (VFS/Consulate)
Application Method 100% online via indianvisaonline.gov.in Online application + physical submission at VFS Dubai
Passport Submission Required No — passport is NOT submitted Yes — original passport must be submitted
Visa in Passport No sticker — e-Visa ETA printed and carried separately Physical sticker visa stamped in passport
Standard Processing Time 3–5 business days (typically) 5–10 business days
Validity Options 30 days, 1 year, 5 years (depends on category) 6 months to 10 years (multiple entry options)
Entry Type Double entry (Tourist 30-day); Multiple entry (1yr/5yr Tourist, Business) Single, double, or multiple entry
Entry Ports Designated airports and seaports only (not all land borders) All designated entry points including land borders
Eligible Nationalities Most nationalities — but NOT Pakistani passport holders All nationalities (Pakistani nationals via consulate, more complex)
Purpose Categories Tourist, Business, Medical, Medical Attendant, Conference Tourist, Business, Employment, Student, Research, Transit, etc.
Best For Short holidays, business trips, quick medical visits Long stays, employment, study, land border crossings, Pakistani nationals, certain other nationalities

For most UAE residents planning a straightforward holiday or business visit to India, the e-Visa is the faster and simpler option. The regular consulate route remains essential for specific nationalities, longer stays, employment purposes, or entry via land borders.

Who Can Apply for a India Visa from the UAE?

The UAE — specifically Dubai and Abu Dhabi — is an authorised jurisdiction for India visa applications. Here's who can apply:

  • UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) — fully eligible for both e-Visa and regular visa.
  • Expats residing in the UAE — eligible to apply from Dubai if you hold a valid UAE residence visa. This covers nationalities from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • Visitors in the UAE on a visit/tourist visa — technically, the Indian consulate prefers applicants to be residents of the country from which they apply. Short-term visitors may apply but could face additional scrutiny; it's worth confirming with the consulate or contacting us before applying.
  • Holders of most nationalities for e-Visa — over 160 nationalities are eligible for India's e-Visa. The Indian government updates this list periodically; check the latest list at indianvisaonline.gov.in before applying.

Who Cannot Apply from Dubai?

This section is critical — and it's where many applicants get caught out. Please read carefully before starting your application.

Pakistani Passport Holders

Pakistani nationals are not eligible for India's e-Visa under any circumstances. Pakistani passport holders must apply for a regular sticker visa through the Indian Consulate in Dubai. The process is significantly more involved:

  • Applications are submitted through VFS Global in Dubai.
  • Processing times are considerably longer — typically 4–12 weeks, and sometimes longer, depending on the type of visit and security clearance requirements.
  • Additional documentation is often required, including detailed travel itinerary, proof of family ties or business relationships in India, and sponsor letters where applicable.
  • Approval is not guaranteed, and the consulate may request an in-person interview.
  • Pakistani nationals are advised to apply well in advance — ideally 2–3 months before the intended travel date.

If you're a Pakistani national based in Dubai planning travel to India, please contact our team directly. We handle these applications with the additional care and documentation preparation they require.

Other Nationalities with Restrictions

  • Afghan nationals — not eligible for e-Visa; must apply via the consulate with additional documentation.
  • Iranian nationals — e-Visa eligibility has been restricted in the past; verify current eligibility before applying online.
  • Some nationalities with diplomatic tensions — eligibility can change. Always verify your specific nationality's e-Visa eligibility on the official Indian government portal before applying.

OCI Cardholders — No Visa Needed, But Check Your Card

OCI cardholders do not need a visa, but there's a common pitfall: if you've renewed your passport after the age of 20 and your OCI card is still linked to an old passport, you must obtain a new OCI card linked to your current passport before travelling. Failure to do this can result in boarding denial or issues at Indian immigration. The only exception is if the new passport and old passport (to which the OCI is linked) are both presented together.

Who Else Should Be Careful

  • Applicants with previously rejected Indian visas should declare this on their application form. Failure to disclose a prior rejection is grounds for cancellation.
  • Those who have previously overstayed an Indian visa — this will be flagged in immigration records.
  • Applicants whose passports have less than 6 months validity from the date of arrival in India — this is a firm requirement.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a India Visa from Dubai

Route 1: India e-Visa (Recommended for Most Applicants)

  1. Check eligibility — Confirm your nationality is e-Visa eligible and choose the correct visa category (Tourist, Business, Medical, etc.).
  2. Complete the online application — Visit the official portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Fill in all personal details, travel information, and upload your documents (passport bio page photo, recent passport-sized photograph, and supporting documents depending on visa type).
  3. Pay the e-Visa fee — Payment is made online by credit or debit card. Fees vary by nationality and visa type (see fee table below).
  4. Receive Application ID — Note down your application ID; you'll need it to check your status.
  5. Wait for processing — The standard processing window is 3–5 business days, though it can be faster or slightly longer depending on volumes.
  6. Download and print your e-Visa — Once approved, you'll receive an email with your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Print this document — you'll need to present it at the immigration counter on arrival in India.
  7. Travel — Arrive at a designated e-Visa port. Note: not all Indian airports are e-Visa enabled. The major UAE-connected airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Amritsar, Goa) all accept e-Visa holders.

Route 2: Regular Visa via VFS Global Dubai

  1. Complete the online application form — Visit the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) portal and fill in the application form. Print the completed form.
  2. Gather all documents — See the document checklist in the next section.
  3. Book a VFS appointment — VFS Global Dubai operates the Indian Visa Application Centre. Book your appointment online at visa.vfsglobal.com/uae/en/ind. The VFS centre is located in Dubai (Al Qusais area — confirm the current address on VFS website as locations can shift).
  4. Submit your application — Attend your appointment, submit your passport and documents, provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) if required, and pay any applicable VFS service fees.
  5. Track your application — Use the VFS tracking tool with your application reference number.
  6. Collect your passport — Once processed, collect your passport with the visa sticker from VFS, or opt for courier return if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

UAE residents can apply for an India visa from Dubai through the official Indian e-visa portal or via authorized visa service centers located across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The process is primarily online, requiring you to fill out the application form, upload documents, and pay the fee digitally. Many Dubai-based applicants also choose registered visa agencies that handle the process on their behalf for added convenience. Once approved, the e-visa is sent directly to your email and is linked to your passport electronically.

The India visa fee for UAE residents in 2026 starts from approximately AED 500, which typically covers the government fee along with service charges applied by authorized processing agencies in Dubai. The exact cost may vary depending on the visa type — tourist, business, or medical — and the processing speed you select. Standard processing is more affordable, while urgent or express processing in Dubai may attract a higher fee. Always confirm the current fee structure with your chosen service provider or the official Indian consulate in Dubai.

When applying for an India e-visa from Dubai, the standard processing time is typically 3 to 5 business days from the date of a successful application submission. In many cases, approvals are received within 72 hours, though this can vary based on application volume and the information provided. Applicants in Dubai are advised to apply at least 7 to 10 days before their planned travel date to account for any delays. Urgent processing options are available through select agencies in Dubai but may cost more than the standard AED 500 rate.

Dubai residents applying for an India visa typically need a valid passport with at least six months of validity, a recent passport-size photograph meeting Indian visa specifications, a copy of their UAE residence visa, and Emirates ID. Additional documents such as flight itineraries, hotel bookings, and bank statements may be required depending on the visa category. Business visa applicants from Dubai may also need an invitation letter from an Indian company. All documents must be submitted in the specified digital format through the e-visa portal or your Dubai-based visa agent.

Yes, non-Indian nationals residing in Dubai with a valid UAE residence visa are eligible to apply for an India visa from the UAE. This includes expatriates of various nationalities such as Pakistani, Filipino, British, and others who are legally residing in Dubai. Your application will be processed based on your country of passport, and the applicable visa type and fee may differ accordingly. It is recommended to check eligibility on the official Indian e-visa portal or consult a Dubai-based visa service provider before applying.

The India e-tourist visa issued to UAE residents is available in single-entry, double-entry, and multiple-entry formats depending on the duration chosen — 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years. The 1-year and 5-year e-visas issued to Dubai applicants typically allow multiple entries within the validity period, with each stay limited to 90 consecutive days. The 30-day e-visa is usually a double-entry option. It is important to select the correct visa type during your application on the Indian e-visa portal to match your travel requirements.

The Consulate General of India in Dubai is located in the Oud Metha area and handles visa, consular, and other official services for Indian nationals and foreign applicants in the UAE. Additionally, there are authorized Visa Application Centers (VACs) in Dubai operated by third-party service providers like VFS Global, which process India visa applications on behalf of the Indian Mission. UAE residents who prefer in-person submission can visit these centers with their documents. For e-visa applications, however, physical visits are not required as the entire process is completed online.

Common reasons for India visa rejection among UAE residents include submitting blurry or incorrectly sized photographs, providing mismatched information between the application form and passport, or having an expired UAE residence visa at the time of application. Incomplete documentation, such as missing Emirates ID copies or insufficient travel history, can also lead to rejections. Applicants in Dubai are strongly advised to double-check all details before submission and ensure their UAE residence visa has sufficient validity. Using a reputable Dubai-based visa agency can help minimize errors and improve approval chances.
