Belgium is a quieter Schengen application than Germany or France, and that works in your favour — but it comes with one warning worth reading before you start, because it is where UAE applicants lose money. An appointment slot for a Belgian Schengen or long-stay visa is always free of charge. Anyone charging you for the slot itself is selling something the embassy gives away. The Belgium visa for UAE residents is a standard Schengen Type C short-stay visa, lodged at visa centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and decided by the Belgian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Do UAE Residents Need a Belgium Visa?
Your passport decides, not your Emirates ID.
Emirati passport holders do not need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, under the EU–UAE waiver.
Other GCC passport holders do. The UAE is the only Gulf state covered, so Bahraini, Kuwaiti, Omani, Qatari and Saudi nationals apply in the ordinary way.
All other nationalities resident in the UAE apply for a Schengen Type C visa. Your residence permit lets you apply from here rather than from your home country; it is not an exemption.
ETIAS begins in the last quarter of 2026 on a date the European Commission has yet to confirm — a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, not a visa.
How the Belgian Route Works
The structure is straightforward once you see it:
- All applications go through VFS Global, in either Abu Dhabi or Dubai. There is no counter route at the embassy for ordinary applicants.
- Your file is then transferred to the Belgian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which decides it. The centre you choose does not change who assesses your case.
- Appointments are booked through VFS and allocated first come, first served — and the slot is always free.
Because both centres feed the same embassy, you can choose the one that is simply more convenient to reach, which is a flexibility Germany and France do not offer.
The Timing Window
Two published figures shape the plan. Applications may be submitted as early as six months before your intended travel date, and the standard processing time is a minimum of two weeks.
Read that second figure carefully: it is a minimum, not a maximum. Two weeks is the floor in a straightforward case, and a file that attracts questions takes longer. Combined with the six-month window, the sensible approach is to lodge months ahead rather than to work backwards from the two-week figure and arrive with a fortnight to spare.
Should You Apply to Belgium?
The EU main-destination rule decides: apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, and where nights are equal, to the country you will enter first. Brussels, Bruges and Ghent are frequently combined with Amsterdam or Paris on the same trip, and Belgium often ends up with fewer nights than it feels like it has. Count them honestly — a file lodged with the wrong mission can be refused on competence alone, whatever its merits.
Documents You Will Need
- Passport valid at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area, issued in the last ten years, with at least two blank pages
- UAE residence permit valid well beyond your return date, plus Emirates ID
- Completed and signed application form with a recent Schengen-specification photograph
- Travel medical insurance covering the whole Schengen area for the full trip, at the minimum required cover
- Confirmed return flights and accommodation for every night
- Employment evidence: NOC or salary certificate from your UAE employer, or trade licence and establishment documents if self-employed
- Stamped personal bank statements for the last three to six months
- For a private visit: an invitation or commitment of support from your host in Belgium, with their identity and residence documents
- For business: an invitation from the Belgian company setting out the purpose and dates
Biometrics and the EES Border System
Fingerprints and a photograph are taken in person at the visa centre — the reason a first Schengen application cannot be completed without you. Once recorded, they can be reused for later Schengen applications within the permitted period.
At the border, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational across all Schengen countries since 10 April 2026. Facial image, fingerprints and travel document data are recorded on entry and exit, and passport stamps have been replaced by digital records, so your 90-days-in-180 is counted automatically across the whole area.

Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make
- Paying someone for an appointment slot. Slots are free and allocated first come, first served.
- Treating "minimum two weeks" as the expected time. It is the floor, not the estimate.
- Ignoring the six-month window and applying with a fortnight to spare.
- Assuming Belgium is the main destination on a trip that is mostly in the Netherlands or France.
- Insurance covering Belgium alone rather than the whole Schengen area.
- Bank statements that are unstamped or show a balance that appeared days before applying.
