Brunei Darussalam is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated destinations — a peaceful, green sultanate on the island of Borneo, home to the magnificent Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the water village of Kampong Ayer, and pristine rainforest at Ulu Temburong National Park. For UAE residents, it also remains refreshingly uncrowded. But unlike many destinations in the region, the Brunei visa from the UAE follows an embassy route with some unusual rules — a strict travel-date window, tourist-purpose-only processing, and validity that is issued around your actual travel dates. At Green Apple Travel & Tourism, serving the UAE since 2012, we handle the entire process for you — including the embassy submission in Abu Dhabi, so you never have to appear in person. This guide covers everything you need to know before you apply.

Do UAE Residents Need a Brunei Visa?

The short answer: it depends on your passport, not your UAE residency status.

UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) do not need a visa for Brunei for short tourist stays. Brunei also has visa-exemption arrangements with a number of other countries — including most ASEAN member states, the United Kingdom, the United States, and much of the European Union — for stays typically ranging from 14 to 90 days depending on nationality.

However, many expat residents of the UAE hold passports that are not visa-exempt for Brunei — including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria and others. For these nationalities, a visa must be issued before travel through a Brunei diplomatic mission — and for UAE residents, that means the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Abu Dhabi.

One important clarification: your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID does not grant you any visa privileges for Brunei. Your eligibility is determined entirely by your nationality. That said, a valid UAE residence visa is a requirement of the Abu Dhabi embassy route — the embassy processes applications from UAE residents, and your residency, employment and bank history form the backbone of your file. The exemption lists are maintained by the Bruneian authorities and change from time to time — send us your nationality on WhatsApp and we will confirm whether you need a visa at all before you spend anything.

How the Brunei Visa Works from the UAE

There is no visa application centre (no VFS or BLS) for Brunei in the UAE. All applications from UAE residents are submitted directly to the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Abu Dhabi. The embassy accepts submissions made on the applicant's behalf by an authorised representative — which is exactly how our service works: you give us your documents and a signed authorization letter, and our team handles the submission and collection in Abu Dhabi for you. No personal appearance, no interview, and no trip to the capital.

Note from Green Apple Travel: Our Brunei application service covers the tourist visa category only. Brunei business visas cannot be processed from the UAE — see the business travel section below for how that route works.

The 14-Day Travel Window Rule

This is the single most unusual feature of the Brunei tourist visa, and the one that catches most applicants out: your travel date must be no more than 14 days after your application. Unlike a Schengen or UK visa, you cannot apply months in advance "to be safe" — the embassy expects your trip to be imminent.

The visa's validity is also issued around your actual travel dates — similar to how Russian visas work. The dates you declare on your application (supported by your flight and hotel reservations) determine the window printed on your visa, so your travel plan needs to be settled before we submit.

In practice, the ideal timeline looks like this:

  • 2–3 weeks before travel: contact us, confirm your travel dates, and start collecting documents.
  • Within 14 days of travel: we submit your complete file to the embassy in Abu Dhabi.
  • 5 working days later: your passport is back with the visa, in time for departure.

Documents Required for a Brunei Tourist Visa

The Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Abu Dhabi requires a complete file at submission — incomplete files are the main cause of delays. Here is the full checklist for UAE residents:

  • Original passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, signed by the bearer.
  • One passport-size photo — white background, recent. (Professional photoshoot available in our office.)
  • Emirates ID copy — both sides.
  • UAE residence visa copy — valid at the time of application and travel.
  • No-objection certificate (NOC) — from your UAE employer or sponsor, confirming your employment and approving your travel.
  • Bank statements — your last 3 months' personal statements, showing your name, transactions and balance.
  • Hotel booking, flight reservation and travel insurance — confirmed reservations covering your declared travel dates. We can arrange all three for you as part of the service, so you do not need to buy non-refundable tickets before your visa is approved.
  • Signed authorization letter — authorising Green Apple Travel & Tourism to submit and collect your application at the embassy on your behalf. We provide the template; you just sign it.

How to Apply Through Green Apple Travel

We have built the process so that you never need to visit Abu Dhabi — or even our office, if you prefer to handle everything remotely:

  1. Send us your details on WhatsApp. Share your passport copy, nationality and intended travel dates. We confirm your eligibility, the exact checklist for your case, and a written quote.
  2. We review your documents. Our consultants check every document against the embassy's requirements before submission — NOC wording, bank statement completeness, photo specs — so problems are fixed before they cost you time.
  3. We complete your file. Flight reservation, hotel booking and travel insurance are arranged to match your declared dates, and we prepare the authorization letter for your signature.
  4. We submit at the embassy in Abu Dhabi. Our team lodges your application with the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam and tracks it through processing.
  5. Passport returned with your visa. After the standard 5 working days, we collect your passport and return it to you — by hand at our Bur Dubai office or by courier.

To get started or request a quote:

Most quote requests receive a written reply within 30 minutes during office hours, including a clear breakdown of what is included, the expected timeline, and the document checklist for your specific case.

Processing Time and Visa Validity

  • Processing time: 5 working days from the date of submission at the embassy, excluding UAE weekends and holidays observed by the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam. Processing time is set by the embassy and cannot be expedited by us.
  • Validity: issued around your declared travel dates — the visa window matches the trip you applied with, not a fixed 30- or 90-day validity from issue.
  • Purpose: tourism. The visa does not permit employment or business activities in Brunei.

Because validity follows your travel dates, changing your trip after the visa is issued usually means a fresh application. Lock in your dates before we submit — and if your plans are genuinely uncertain, talk to us first about refundable booking options.

Travelling to Brunei for Business?

Brunei handles business visits differently from most countries: a business visa cannot be applied for from the UAE. Instead, the inviting company or person in Brunei must process the visa application inside Brunei with the local immigration authorities, and the approval is arranged from their side before you travel.

If you are travelling for meetings, negotiations or a trade event, ask your Bruneian host to initiate the visa process at their end. A tourist visa obtained through the embassy route cannot be used for business purposes — declaring the wrong purpose of travel risks refusal at the border and problems with future applications. We can still assist with your flights, hotel and travel insurance for a business trip, and we are happy to explain the process to your host company if that helps.

Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make

  • Applying too early. If your travel date is more than 14 days away, the application cannot go in yet. We schedule your submission for the right window instead.
  • Missing or informal NOC. The no-objection letter must come from your UAE employer or sponsor on letterhead. A verbal "it's fine" from HR is not a document.
  • Short bank statements. Three full months are required — a one-month mini statement or a screenshot of your banking app will not be accepted.
  • Buying non-refundable tickets before approval. Visa decisions rest with the embassy. Use reservations (we arrange them) until the visa is in your passport.
  • Unsigned or missing authorization letter. Without it we cannot lodge the file on your behalf — it is the document that makes the no-personal-appearance route possible.
  • Planning business meetings on a tourist visa. Business purposes must be processed by your host inside Brunei — see the section above.
