Ireland is one of the few European destinations where UAE residents routinely arrive at the wrong answer before they start — because the single most common assumption about it is false. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area, and a Schengen visa does not admit you. It runs its own visa system, with its own application, its own rules, and one scheme that can remove the requirement entirely for certain passports. At Green Apple Travel & Tourism, a Dubai travel house since 2012, we start every Ireland file by establishing which of those positions applies to you, because the difference is an application you may not need to make.

Do UAE Residents Need an Ireland Visa?

Ireland's Immigration Service is explicit that the country is outside the Schengen Area and operates independently: a Schengen visa does not grant entry to Ireland, and an Irish visa does not grant entry to Schengen countries. Travellers who hold a multi-entry Schengen visa and assume it covers Dublin are the group we most often correct.

Whether you need a visa is decided by your passport nationality. Nationals of a long list of countries may visit without one. If your passport is visa-required — Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and many others — you will need an Irish visa before you travel, unless one of the two schemes below applies to you.

The British-Irish Visa Scheme — the shortcut most people miss

Ireland and the United Kingdom mutually recognise each other's short-stay visit visas under the British-Irish Visa Scheme. Under it, citizens of India and China who hold a short-stay UK visit visa can travel to Ireland without applying for a separate Irish visa.

For the UAE that is a significant provision rather than a technicality. A large share of the Indian community here already travels to the UK on a multi-entry visit visa, and for those travellers a trip to Dublin may require no Irish application at all. It is the first thing we check on an Indian passport, and it is regularly missed by applicants working from a generic checklist.

The scheme is specific: it covers short-stay visit visas, not every UK visa category, and the travel must be consistent with what that visa permits. We confirm the exact endorsement on your UK visa before telling you that you are covered.

The Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme — and its important limit

A second scheme, the Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme, allows nationals of a defined list of Eastern European, Middle Eastern and Asian countries who have entered the UK on a valid UK short-stay visa to continue on to Ireland without a separate Irish visa.

There is a restriction here that is easy to miss and increasingly decisive: only UK short-stay visas issued before the introduction of the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation on 1 February 2024 can be used under this programme. As those older visas expire, the route narrows. The permitted stay is 90 days or the time remaining on your UK permission — whichever is shorter.

The programme is also not reciprocal: it does not allow someone who needs a UK visa to enter the UK on the strength of an Irish one.

Your situationWhat normally applies
Visa-exempt passportNo visa needed for a short visit
Indian or Chinese passport with a short-stay UK visit visaTravel under the British-Irish Visa Scheme — no Irish visa
Listed nationality holding a pre-February-2024 UK short-stay visaShort Stay Visa Waiver Programme may apply
Visa-required passport, no qualifying UK visaShort Stay 'C' visa before travel
Holding only a Schengen visaNot valid for Ireland — an Irish visa is required

The Short Stay 'C' Visa

Where an application is needed, the Short Stay 'C' visa is the tourist and family-visit route. It permits a stay of up to 90 days, and applications can be lodged up to three months before your intended travel date.

Irish visa officers apply a test that catches many otherwise complete files: you must demonstrate sufficiently strong family, social or economic ties to your country of residence to satisfy the officer that your stay in Ireland will be temporary. For a UAE resident this means your Emirates ID, residence visa, employment and financial position are not box-ticking — they are the substance of the application. A file that shows a stable, evidenced life in the UAE is a materially stronger file.

Documents Required

  • Passport valid well beyond your intended stay, with blank pages, plus copies of previous passports where relevant.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, valid comfortably beyond your travel dates.
  • Signed application summary and recent passport-style photographs to the published specification.
  • Evidence of ties to the UAE — employment letter stating position, salary and approved leave, or trade licence if self-employed.
  • Personal bank statements covering recent months, stamped by your bank.
  • Flight and accommodation reservations — we arrange these rather than have you buy before a decision.
  • Travel insurance for the period of the visit.
  • Invitation letter and the host's status documents where you are visiting family or friends.

How to Apply Through Green Apple Travel

Send your passport data page, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID and — this matters — any valid UK visa you hold on WhatsApp. We check the British-Irish Visa Scheme and the waiver programme first. If either covers you, we say so and you travel without an Irish application.

If an application is required, we build the file around the ties test rather than simply collecting documents, arrange the reservations that support it, submit it and follow it to the decision. Where a file looks weak on ties we will tell you before submitting, because a refusal is recorded and makes the next application harder.

For a written quote covering your nationality and dates, message us on WhatsApp or use the enquiry form on this page.

Processing Time and Validity

Applications may be lodged up to three months ahead, and our advice is to use that window. Irish decision times move with seasonal demand and are not something any agent can shorten; we do not offer, and cannot arrange, expedited processing.

Length of stay, validity and entries are set by the visa officer and printed on the visa. Note that a short-stay visa is for visits: it does not permit taking up work in Ireland. Employment permits and work visas are a separate legal route that we do not process, and we would rather say so plainly than take on a file we cannot serve.

Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make

  • Assuming a Schengen visa covers Ireland. It does not. Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and requires its own visa.
  • Not mentioning a UK visa. For Indian passport holders this is the single most valuable fact in the file — it may remove the application entirely.
  • Relying on a post-February-2024 UK visa for the waiver programme. Only UK short-stay visas issued before the ETA's introduction qualify.
  • Thin evidence of ties to the UAE. The ties test is where borderline applications fail; a bare employment letter is rarely enough.
  • Buying non-refundable tickets before a decision. Use reservations — we arrange them.
  • Applying too late. You can apply three months ahead; leaving it to the last fortnight removes every safety margin.

I had an outstanding experience working with Anastasia for my Ukraine visa application. From the very beginning, Anastasia was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented. She handled every step of my visa application with exceptional care and made sure that every document was prepared correctly. What impressed me the most was how Anastasia noticed several mistakes I had made before submitting my application. She carefully corrected everything, explained what needed to be changed, and made sure my application met all the requirements. Without Anastasia, I would have probably submitted an incomplete or incorrect application. Throughout the whole process, Anastasia was always responsive, patient, and supportive. She paid attention to even the smallest details and genuinely cared about helping me achieve the best possible outcome. If you’re looking for someone to assist you with visa applications, I highly recommend Anastasia. Her professionalism, expertise, and dedication made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Thank you so much, Anastasia, for your incredible support—I truly appreciate everything you did for me!
